Today, the Supreme Court of the United States made a landmark ruling in the case Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization (court file 19-1392). From the Epoch Times:
In the case, the only state-licensed abortion clinic in Mississippi [Jackson Women's Health Organization] opposed the state’s Gestational Age Act, which allows abortions after 15 weeks gestation only for medical emergencies or severe fetal abnormality. Citing Roe, lower courts held that the state statute was unconstitutional.
The Supreme Court ruled against Jackson Women’s Health and in doing so, overturned Roe v. Wade and Planned Parenthood v. Casey. From the Supreme Court’s majority opinion:
The Constitution does not confer a right to abortion; Roe and Casey are overruled; and the authority to regulate abortion is returned to the people and their elected representatives.
This means that the Federal Government no longer has the authority to protect abortion access. As stated in the majority opinion, that authority has been returned to the states.
So what happens now? Thirteen states have so-called “trigger laws,” meaning that the laws are triggered when a certain event occurs. In this case, it was the overruling of Roe v. Wade. The “trigger laws” have made most abortions illegal in Arkansas, Idaho, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, and Wyoming.
Five other states have laws that banned abortion before Roe v. Wade was decided. Those states are: Alabama, Arizona, Michigan, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.
Based on previous legislative activity, Florida, Indiana, Montana, and Nebraska will likely ban some or all abortions now that they posses the authority.
Georgia, Iowa, Ohio, and South Carolina have laws that ban abortions after six weeks, but their laws could be revisited in light of the ruling, according to The Guttmacher Institute.
All in all, this is a huge win for the pro-life movement. While abortions will still take place, they have been severely limited. Any chance we can get to slow baby murder is an occasion for celebration. Pray that more states will ban abortion, that our elected leaders will be regenerated by God, and that the gospel will be spread among the people.
P.S. Here’s the majority opinion just in case you care to read through a 213 page document:
Praise God!!!
